EAST ASIAN STUDIES (EA ST) MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

This is an interdisciplinary major, with a strong disciplinary core, for students who want a basic understanding of the background and contemporary aspect of China, Japan, and Korea. For the B.A. degree in East Asian Studies, a minimum of 124 credits is required.

Scheduling Recommendation by Semester Standing given like (Sem:1-2)

  • GENERAL EDUCATION: 46 credits

  • ELECTIVES: 24 credits

  • BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: 24 credits

  • REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR: 30 credits§

  • ADDITIONAL COURSES (30 credits)

    • Select 3 credits beyond the 12-credit level of proficiency in an East Asian language:
      CHNS 110, JAPNS 110, or the equivalent (Sem:3-6)

    • Select 9 credits with 3 credits from each of the three categories (HIST, RL ST, CMLIT/PHIL) below:*

      • HIST 174 GH;DF or 175 GH;DF (Sem:1-4)

      • RL ST 003 GH;DF, 104 GH;DF, or 181 DF (Sem:1-4)

      • CMLIT 004 GH;DF, or PHIL 111 GH;DF (Sem:1-4)

  • Select 18 credits from the following, at least 12 credits of which are to be at the 400 level; independent study credits selected in consultation with adviser; additional further credits in language studies may be permitted up to 6 credits*:

    • ART H 120 GA, 320 GA, CHNS 401, 402, 496, CMLIT 004 GH;DF, 404, EA ST 401, ECON 474, GEOG 443, HIST 172 DF, 174 GH;DF, 175 GH;DF, 480, 481 DF, 483, 485W, 486, JAPNS 401, 402, 496, PHIL 111 GH;DF, PL SC 145, 458, 468, RL ST 003 GH;DF, 104 GH;DF, 181 DF, 409 DF, 481 DF, 483 DF, THEA 406 (Sem:1-7)

  • STUDY ABROAD:  East Asian Study Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad at some point during their coursework

§A student enrolled in this major must receive a grade of C or better, as specified in Senate Policy 82-44.

*Credit received for a specific course will not count in more than one category.


ASIAN AREA STUDIES MINOR REQUIREMENTS

This is an interdisciplinary minor designed for students with special interests in the Asian area. In addition to the requirements of the student's major department, the minor consists of 21 credits selected from such disciplines as anthropology, art history, economics, geography, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, political science, religious studies, speech, theatre arts, and appropriate Asian languages.

  • REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR: 21 credits

  • PRESCRIBED COURSES (6 credits)

    • HIST 174 or 175 GH; DF (3) (Sem:3-6)

    • RL ST 003 GH; DF (3) (Sem:5-6)

  • SUPPORTING COURSES AND RELATED AREAS (15 credits)

    • Select 15 credits, at least 6 at the 400 level, with the approval of the program head (Sem:3-8)
